Gold Reef City is built around the shaft of what was once the richest gold mine in South Africa and the World, Shaft 14 of the Crown Mines. It is one of Gauteng's premier tourist attractions and is a great sightseeing trip.
This living museum recaptures the riotous times of Johannesburg's gold rush that began in 1886 after the gold fields were proclaimed by the last president of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek, President Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, fondly known as Oom Paul or "Uncle" Paul.
