Gold Reef City is built around the shaft of what was once the richest gold mine in South Africa and the World, Shaft 14 of the Crown Mines. It is one of Gauteng's premier tourist attractions and is a great sightseeing trip.
This living museum recaptures the riotous times of Johannesburg's gold rush that began in 1886 after the gold fields were proclaimed by the last president of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek, President Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, fondly known as Oom Paul or "Uncle" Paul.
The tour, Jozi's Story of Gold, is a guided tour and includes the underground mine tour where you go down the mine shaft in a lift to a depth of 220 metres, a live pouring of gold into rough bars, and a display of traditional gumboot dancing.
Visitors will also be able to visit some Victorian buildings of the Gold Rush era and step back in time to see how people during that time lived.
As this is mainly an open-air museum, we suggest that our guests be fit and wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along some sunscreen, the Highveld sun can be a scorcher!
Gold Reef City is also a theme park with adrenalin filled rides for kids of all ages. There are plenty of thrills waiting for you and your children, as such it is the ideal destination for that special Family day trip in Johannesburg.
Unfortunately children under 6 are not allowed on the underground mine tour that lasts about 45 minutes.
This tour is not available on Mondays as the attraction is closed.
