Pretoria was established in 1855 as the capital of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (ZAR). The city oozes history. The metropolitan area is now known as Tshwane and much has changed over the years but Pretoria still has an aura of regal mystique as befits the capital city of South Africa.

We visit the famous Union Buildings designed and built by the well known architect and mason, Sir herbert Baker. The Union Buildings, once the seat of our Government still house the offices of the State President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its sprawling and well manicured gardens are the perfect place for photo opportunities and offer lovely views over the city.

We also visit Church Square - with the gigantic statue of President Paul Kruger. The impressive heart of the inner city encompasses the Old Government Building or Raadsaal, the old National Mint and the Palace of Justice. These old buildings were designed by well known architects of the time and each has its own character and story. 

Pass the house of the Old State President of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek, Paul Kruger or Oom Paul as we like to remember him.

We also visit the Voortrekker Monument. This monolithic monument was built to honour the Voortrekkers, Afrikaner farmers or Boers that made the arduous and difficult trek from the Cape colonies to the northern interior. This often controversial site is a must see attraction and it stands tall over Pretoria's southern skyline. Its place in history is unmoved and it offers visitors a glimpse into the pshyche of a nation.

If you visit us during Spetember and early October you will also be lucky enough to witness the splendour of the blooming jacarandas that have given this most beautiful capital city its nickname of Jacaranda City!

Though it is not certain if the name Pretoria will endure, its contribution to our history remains unchanged.
